How to Make a Motorhome Inventory List (+ Free Template)

An inventory list is boring — right up until your motorhome gets broken into. Then it decides whether your insurer pays out or you’re left staring at an empty locker, unable to say what was there. Here’s what really belongs on it, plus our free template.

Most camper owners carry thousands of euros of gear on board — e-bikes, cameras, drones, tools, solar kit. Yet almost no one can say, after a break-in, exactly what’s gone, what it cost, and where the receipt is. A proper inventory list closes exactly that gap.

Why a quick list in a notebook isn’t enough

“E-bike, camera, tools” scribbled on a page beats nothing — but when you claim, your insurer asks for details a list like that can’t give. Without a serial number a stolen device is hard to trace; without a receipt its value is disputable; without a date you can’t work out the depreciated value. The more precise your documentation, the faster and fuller the settlement.

What belongs on every motorhome inventory list

For each valuable item, capture these fields:

  • Name & category — e.g. “E-bike · Cube Stereo Hybrid”.
  • Make & model — as precisely as you can.
  • Serial / frame number — the single most important field for tracing a theft.
  • Purchase date — for working out the depreciated value.
  • Purchase price — ideally backed by a receipt.
  • Replacement value — what you’d pay to buy it again today.
  • Receipt / photo — invoice, warranty card, or a sharp photo showing the serial number.
  • Location on board — which zone (cab, living area, rear garage, roof box).

Step by step: your list in 30 minutes

Walk through the vehicle, zone by zone

Start at the front and work your way back. Note every item over roughly €50 — group smaller things together (“kitchen utensils”).

Photograph each item — including the serial number

A photo doesn’t replace an invoice, but it’s strong evidence. Keep the serial/frame number sharp and in frame — that saves you hunting for it later entirely.

Gather the receipts

Invoices, warranty cards, bank statements showing the payment — anything that proves purchase and value. Digitize paper receipts with your phone right away, before they fade.

Keep the list up to date

New e-bike, new camera? Add it right away. A list that’s two years old misses half your gear. Block out five minutes once a year to run through it.
